Participating in a youth exchange

The spectrum of different formats is wide and is aimed at school pupils as well as university students and professionals

In this overview we have listed opportunities for voluntary service and opportunities for direct participation in youth exchanges between young people from African countries and Germany. The various programmes offer the opportunity to become involved according to one's own talents and goals.

Young people should have the opportunity to get involved regardless of their financial situation. For this reason, all the programmes described here largely support participation by means of a grant or a scholarship.

ASA Programme

The ASA programme is aimed at young students, university graduates and working people and sees itself as a workshop for global learning. ASA supports international learning communities of young people who want to explore their scope for action in our networked world and who want to support sustainable development. The focus is also on considering one's own position within global contexts and power structures. The ASA programme awards approximately 280 scholarships annually to young people between the ages of 21 and 35. In Germany you can apply directly for one of the ASA programmes. In African countries, applications are submitted via one of the ASA partner organisations.

The development volunteers service weltwärts offers young people between the age of 18 and 28 the opportunity to do voluntary service for at least six months and up to two years. The fields of activity are as varied as they are numerous and range from environmental education or human rights work to work in a sports club.

The Autumn School is a programme that gets young social entrepreneurs from African countries and Germany together and takes place once a year. The mutual exchange and networking with experts play an important role in this.

Contact African youth exchange providers in South Africa and Tanzania

All participants of the African-German Youth Initiative in Benin, Germany, South Africa and Tanzania are available as contact persons. They can provide an overview of existing hosting and sending organisations for youth exchanges and voluntary services in your region and point out participation opportunities.

Within the framework of the African-German Youth Initiative, Engagement Global's participation centre not only offers you comprehensive information on various programmes relating to development youth exchange and voluntary services, but also helps you to find the programme that suits you best. The advisory services comprise the programmes of Engagement Global, but also include programmes offered by civil society, business and ministries. If you are interested or have specific questions, please contact us via our contact form, e-mail or telephone. In a personal conversation you will find out whether you can apply to participate in an Engagement Global programme and whether you are eligible for a grant.
